The cavesson - an all-rounder for riding and lunging
The cavesson is considered to be a gentle, yet precise aid in the training of the horse, as it acts on the nose bone and neck of the horse. It is particularly popular for lunging and ground work. Cavessons usually have three rings on the noseband, so that lunge lines and (auxiliary) reins can be attached. Make sure that the rings are not too far forward if you want to use the cavesson for riding.

Are they all cavessons or what?
The cavesson comes in different variations, including the German version, where a heavy nose iron made of one to three links provides stability and shows the horse the way down. Other variations of the cavesson are the Spanish serreta or the French cavecon. The materials used are often leather or nylon. In addition, leather cavessons are naturally heavier than nylon cavessons. Some bridle models do not have a nose iron, these are more suitable for riding than for lunging as they tend to slip more quickly. Even though the lunge is usually attached to a ring on the noseband and is thus used bitless, some cavesson models also have the option of buckling in a bit. In our range you will find bridles from Karlslund and Kincade, among others.

Can you attach side reins to a cavesson?

Lunging with a cavesson is very versatile. In addition to lunging without auxiliary reins, it is also possible to attach side reins to the cavesson. This way, the sensitive horse’s mouth remains completely unaffected. This method is particularly suitable for young horses or horses that are very sensitive in the mouth.

It is also possible to use the cavesson in combination with a snaffle bridle and attach the side reins to the bit rings. Alternatively, the side reins can be attached to the cavesson instead. Both options are possible depending on the desired effect. The basic requirement for either method is that the cavesson fits properly and is correctly adjusted.
