Horse Bits

When measuring the bit size, always measure the length from the inside of one bit ring (or cheekpiece) to the inside of the opposite one. Make sure the bit is straightened. The thickness of the bit is always measured just inside the bit ring. When placed in the horse’s mouth, there should be max. 5mm (¼") play on either side of the bit. Note: Bits with cheekpieces should be chosen 0.5cm smaller, just like mullen mouths. The weymouth should always be 0.5-1.0cm (-") smaller than the bradoon.

A Mullen mouth loose ring bit is a great choice for a gentle, simple bit which won't interfere with the horse's tongue and will offer a sure response. Rubber bits are extra beneficial for sensitive horses because the mouthpiece is more flexible, and the rubber increases chewing and salivation. The fixed mouthpiece ensures pressure on the tongue doesn't change significantly.
